About Us :: Background
The Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership Alumni Association is incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization representing members and their respective organizations in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in minority and underserved populations. Our mission is addressed through the provision of professional development opportunities for members as well as capacity-building programs for their organizations. We actively advocate for and pursue collaborative partnerships with public and private organizations on behalf of our members in order to expand and enhance the effectiveness of HIV prevention programs in the communities they serve.
Founded in 2001, the Association represents a national network of more than 175 members and their community-based organizations. Each member has successfully completed an intensive nine-month capacity-building program in which they received comprehensive training in principles of public health prevention and strategic planning and management.
A 2008 national survey of Association members demonstrates the majority of our member organizations provide HIV prevention, STI, and/or hepatitis programs to populations of color. These initiatives are funded by federal, state, and/or local public health agencies in addition to other public and private institutions. Several provide capacity-building and technical assistance to other community-based organizations as well.
Current activities of the Association focus on provision of professional development programs for our members, pursuing expanded partnerships in HIV prevention with federal agencies and other organizations, and co-sponsoring capacity-building distance learning programs such as the Steps to Success in Community-Based HIV/AIDS Prevention series offered nationwide through the federally funded CDC/ASPH Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership.
