Association Partners on CDC Sponsored National Hepatitis Prevention Initiative.

The IHPL Alumni Association is partnering with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health and other organizations on a five year cooperative agreement sponsored by CDC’s Division of Viral Hepatitis. The purpose of this national initiative is to establish a National Training Center for Integrated Hepatitis/HIV/STD Prevention Programs and Services in Community-Based Organizations and Clinics (NTC).

During the five award period the NTC and its partner organizations will develop, implement, and evaluate a series of training programs on integrating hepatitis prevention into existing HIV and STD programs and services. Planned trainings are targeted to front line workers providing direct services to clients in CBOs and clinics. Members of our Association are involved in all aspects of planning, implementation, and evaluation of the NTC trainings.

Based on reports from CDC, more than fifty applications were received in response to the RFP for this initiative, and our partnership with UAB was one of only six new initiatives awarded. Importantly, the need for this initiative was documented by our Association’s 2008 hepatitis training needs assessment in which 51 member organizations in 22 states/territories participated. Thanks to all of the members that responded to the assessment and continue to support our capacity-building efforts!
